Scott Campbell and J.P. Arencibia launched balls out of the park in New Hampshire, while Allen Craig and Aaron Cunningham had big nights in the Texas League.
EASTERN LEAGUE
Prospect Of The Day
Less than a week after Travis Snider put on a show for the hometown fans in Manchester at the Eastern League All-Star game, his Fisher Cats teammates continued to launch balls out of their home park. Yesterday it was second baseman Scott Campbell (2-for-5 with two home runs) and catcher J.P. Arencibia (2-for-3 with two home runs as the DH) doing the damage and sharing EL Prospect Of The Day honors. Campbell, 23, is now batting .333/.422/.474 in 321 at-bats, while the 22-year-old Arencibia is at .306/.304/.568 in 111 at-bats (yeah, that’s right—no walks) with the Fisher Cats since his promotion from high Class A Dunedin.
Prospect Nuggets
Harrisburg righthander Jordan Zimmermann (Nationals) struck out nine in 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs and just one walk … Bowie righthander Chris Tillman (Orioles) got roughed up at Reading. The 20-year-old surrendered four runs (three earned) in four innings, walked four and struck out three … Reading shortstop and 2008 Olympian Jason Donald (Phillies) did some of the damage against Tillman. Donald, 23, finished 3-for-5 with a walk, though he did commit his 17th error.
What To Watch For Today
Portland lefthander Kris Johnson (Red Sox) takes the ball tonight at home against Connecticut (Giants).
TEXAS LEAGUE
Prospect Of The Day
Aaron Cunningham might be getting lost in the wave of talented prospects that have entered Oakland’s system within the last year, but the Midland center fielder separated himself last night with a home run and a double. Cunningham, 22, went 2-for-3 and drew a walk, raising his season line to .301/.376/.480 in 279 at-bats.
Prospect Nuggets
Springfield third baseman Allen Craig (Cardinals) homered and doubled yesterday, going 3-for-3 with a walk. Craig, who turned 24 on Friday, is now up to .295/.360/.495 in 390 at-bats … San Antonio righthander Will Inman (Padres) struggled with his control yesterday, walking six batters in 4 1/3 innings, allowing two runs and striking out three.
What To Watch For Today
Lefthander Josh Outman made his last start for Reading as a member of the Phillies organization on Wednesday in the Eastern League All-Star game, where his fastball sat at 94-96 mph. Now with Midland in the deal that sent Joe Blanton from Oakland to Philadelphia, Outman has returned to a starter’s role, and will make his debut tonight at San Antonio.
SOUTHERN LEAGUE
Prospect Of The Day
Mobile right fielder Gerardo Parra may end the season as one of the top two prospects in the Diamondbacks organization after trades and graduations have thinned a strong farm system. Parra, a 21-year-old who shows a good feel for the strike zone and a strong fundamental swing, also has plus speed, which he used yesterday to swipe three bases, giving him 12 in 13 attempts with Mobile and 24 in 29 attempts overall this season. Parra, who went 1-for-3 with a walk yesterday, is now batting .264/.329/.357 in 140 Double-A at-bats after hitting .301/.381/.413 in 196 at-bats with high Class A Visalia.
Prospect Nuggets
Parra’s teammate, righthander Brooks Brown, shut out Chattanooga through six innings. Brown allowed five hits, three walks and struck out four, lowering his ERA to 3.54 in 112 innings … Carolina lefty Aaron Thompson (Marlins) came off the disabled list and made his first start back in Double-A since May 12, but the results were much the same as his disappointing start to the season. Thompson allowed six runs (five earned) in 3 2/3 innings, surrendering eight hits and four walks with just one strikeout. The outing put Thompson’s Double-A ERA at 5.56 in 45 1/3 innings with 28 strikeouts and 30 walks.
What To Watch For Today
There are no SL games today.
