Rookie Dish: Decker Is An AZL Hit

Prospect of the Day

AZL Padres center fielder Jaff Decker (Padres) went 2-for-4 Friday with a double his first professional home run, and then went 2-for-3 Sunday. A supplemental first-round pick from an Arizona high school, and is 9-for-17 (.529) in his first five games. He has also walked eight times, pushing his on-base percentage to .680.

Prospect Nuggets

There is no ignoring what Orem LF Roberto Lopez (Angels) has done so far this season. After going a combined 7-for-14 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the 25th-round pick from Southern California is hitting .491 on the season. Lopez has nine multi-hit games in his last 10 and has eight doubles, one homer and 11 RBIs. . . . Billings LHP Aguido Gonzalez (Reds) struck out four batters in an inning on Saturday. . . . Helena CF Erik Komatsu (Brewers) hit two home runs in Sunday’s game. He is hitting .405 with three homers and 10 RBIs in his first 10 games. . . . Even the rain that forced four teams to miss games Sunday in the Appalachian League couldn’t stop Kingsport SS Wilmer Flores’ (Mets) hot start. The 16-year-old capped off a huge weekend with a 1-for-4 performance on Sunday in the Mets’ 5-2 loss. Flores had a home run in both Friday and Saturday’s games. . . . The first run batted in of Princeton SS Tim Beckham’s (Rays) young career came in the fifth inning of the Devil Rays’ 5-4 win over Greeneville. Beckham was removed from the game to make way for his brother Jeremy, who ended up scoring the winning run in the 10th inning. . . . GCL Marlins C Kyle Skipworth (Marlins first-round pick) is still looking for his first professional hit. Skipworth, who debuted Friday, was 0-for-4 on Sunday with four strikeouts. The highly touted catching prospect has struck out in five of his first eight at-bats. . . . CCL Orioles CF Xavier Avery (Orioles) appears to be hitting his stride after a 2-for-5 day was his second multi-hit performance of the weekend, though he’s still batting .226/.226/.540.

What to Watch for Today

The Appalachian League hopes to get back in the swing of thing after having two games rained out last night.
