Midwest League
Prospect of the Day
Deibinson Romero (Twins) has the bat speed to become a major league third baseman. But he hasn’t yet shown the production that goes with that bat speed. He did on Thursday, as he went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs. He also hit his sixth double of the season, and raised his averages to .241/.267/.373.
Prospect Nuggets
Luis Bautista (Cubs) hit a homer and a double as part of a 2-for-4 day…Wynn Pelzer (Padres) threw six shutout innings, decreasing his ERA to 3.57. He gave up three hits, but struck out five in the process…Brian Broderick (Cardinals) also had a strong outing. He lasted seven innings and scattered nine hits. He struck out just two batters, but only one run came across…Jonathan Jaspe (Blue Jays) saw his average jump to .404 after he went 3-for-3 with a home run last night.
What to Watch For
Wisconsin and Cedar Rapids stopped play in the sixth inning due to weather, but it was a wild one until that point. Wisconsin led 12-11 in a game that featured 27 hits, five errors and innings of six and seven runs. The game will be completed tonight at 7 p.m.
South Atlantic League
Prospect of the Day
Better known as a defensive standout who has drawn comparisons to Ryan Zimmerman and Mike Lowell at the hot corner, Matt Dominguez (Marlins) put his bat to work last night. Down by three in the eighth inning, Dominguez stepped to the plate with the bases loaded, and he delivered. His grand slam proved to be the game winner in an 8-7 contest.
Dominguez’s eighth bomb of the year was his only hit of the night, but it was a timely one. His average now sits at .327.
Prospect Nuggets
Jeremy Hall (Rays) was lights-out for eight shutout innings yesterday. He gave up three hits and a walk, but fanned eight batters to get the win…Jered Stanley (Red Sox) hit a homer and a double, knocked in two runs and scored two to boost his average to .369…Ryan Adams (Orioles) had a similar statline. His three hits included his fourth home run and his 17th double of the year…Miguel Socolovich (White Sox) and Leandro Cespedes (Astros) were locked in a pitchers’ duel. Socolovich took the win after allowing one run in seven frames and striking out four. Cespedes was just as good, throwing 6.2 and allowing a run on two hits. He struck out eight, but got a no decision.
What to Watch For
Asheville beat Hickory in a close 2-1 contest last night. Hickory will have a shot at revenge tonight at 7:05.
