Conroy was part of the Indians’ 2001 draft bonanza–the Tribe had five of the first 51 overall picks, with Conroy picked 43rd overall out of Boston College High in Dorchester, Mass. The rest of the group included righthanders Dan Denham, Alan Horne, J.D. Martin and Jake Dittler. Horne didn’t sign and now is in the Yankees organization, and none of the rest made a mark above Double-A for the Indians.

Maekawa, a 10-year veteran of the Japanese major leagues, inked a minor league deal with the Nationals. The 29-year-old lefty went 1-7, 4.37 for Orix last season, striking out 46 and walking 29 in 59 2/3 innings. He caught the eye of Nationals officials while pitching in the Dominican Winter League.
