This week’s installment considers all transactions reported by MLB between Jan. 23 and Jan. 25.
Last week’s transactions available here.
Boston Red Sox
Signed: RHP Jacob Miller
Signed: RHP Chris Young, 2B Marcus Giles
This is Chris Matthew Young, who was released by the Marlins in August. Giles’ reclamation in San Diego did not come to pass. He batted .229/.304/.317, and the Padres quickly declined his option. Now the Padres are looking to Tadahito Iguchi—or longshots Callix Crabbe, Oscar Robles, Luis Rodriguez or Craig Stansberry—to fill the second-base hole if Matt Antonelli is not ready.
Signed: 2B David Newhan
Released: C Jeff Mackor, 2B Kevin Hooper, SS Robert Evans, OF Andrew Holder
Kansas City Royals
Signed: RHP Brian Lawrence
Lawrence provided the Padres with league-average pitching (and plenty of innings) from 2001 to 2004, but his stuff has faded badly since then. Major league batters lit him up in 2007, hitting .347 against him in six emergency starts for the Mets. His record: 1-2, 6.83.
Los Angeles Dodgers
Signed: LHP Tom Martin
New York Mets
Signed: RHP Jose Santiago
New York Yankees
Signed: SS Chris Woodward
Woodward will always have 2002, when at age 26 he hit .276/.330/.468 in 90 games as Toronto’s shortstop. He’s had just one productive season since—his 2005 with the Mets (.283/.337/.393)—and now with his bat and range in serious decline, he’ll duke it out with Wilson Betemit for leftover playing time. That is, if he can crack the major league roster.
St. Louis Cardinals
Signed: 1B Chris Gibson
The son of Hall of Fame righthander Bob Gibson, Chris played college ball for Southeast Missouri State. The lefty-hitting first baseman signed with independent Gateway (Frontier) for the 2007 season and batted .260/.316/.304. He was drafted in the 47th round out of Bellevue (Neb.) East High by the Cardinals in 2002.
San Diego Padres
Signed: RHP David Reyes, RHP Hector Sanchez, C Hans Wilson, OF Rosario Carrillo
Placed on voluntarily retired list: LHP Greg Moviel
Tampa Bay Rays
Signed: RHP Stephen Andrade, LHP Roger Deago
Outrighted off 40-man roster: 1B Chris Shelton
Shelton gets scuttled from the 40-man mere weeks after being acquired for minor league spare part Freddy Guzman. First baseman Ben Broussard had been acquired subsequently, and catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia has some experience—but little aptitude as of yet—at the position, too.
Signed: RHP Chris Booker, RHP Sam Marsonek
