This week’s installment considers all transactions reported by MLB between Nov. 22 and 30. Last week’s transactions are available here.
Signed: SS Don Kelly
Signed: LHP Jonathon Rouwenhorst
Boston Red Sox
Signed: 3B Keith Ginter
Chicago White Sox
Signed: SS Mike Rouse
Signed: RHP Justin Lehr, RHP Ricky Stone
Signed: RHP Doug Waechter, LHP Carlos Alvarez
Kansas City Royals
Signed: RHP Ezequiel Amador, LHP Michael Connolly, OF Juan Polonia, OF Ovandy Suero
Outrighted off 40-man roster: LHP Paul Mildren
The minor league stolen-base king with 75 (and runner-up with 21 caught stealings), the switch-hitting Suero batted .252/.306/.296 for the Tigers’ high Class A Lakeland club. He’s already 25, so his ceiling is extremely limited, despite his plus-plus speed. The Braves signed Suero from the Dominican Republic in 2002, but released him in December 2006.
Los Angeles Angels
Signed: RHP Henry Bonilla, OF Chad Hermansen
Los Angeles Dodgers
Signed: 3B Terry Tiffee
The switch-hitting Tiffee, 28, joins his third organization in three years. A 26th-round pick of the Twins in 1999, Tiffee has established himself at the Triple-A level, hitting .279/.320/.431 over the past four seasons for Rochester and Norfolk. Playing in Las Vegas’ Cashman Field and in the Pacific Coast League, in general, should do wonders for his power numbers.
Signed: RHP Jason Karnuth, RHP Edwin Linares, C Orton Rodriguez, SS Carlos Guzman
Signed: RHP R.A. Dickey, LHP Mariano Gomez
Traded: RHP Matt Garza, RHP Eduardo Morlan and SS Jason Bartlett to Devil Rays for OF Delmon Young, SS Brendan Harris and OF Jason Pridie
Outrighted off 40-man roster: LHP Ricky Barrett, LHP Errol Simonitsch
Dickey, 33, won Pacific Coast League pitcher of the year honors with Triple-A Nashville (Brewers) in 2007, going 13-6, 3.72 in 169 innings. Follow the link above for full details of the Garza-Young trade.
New York Mets
Signed: LHP Saydel Beltran, SS Anderson Machado
Few players can work a walk like Machado, who has a career minor league on-base percentage of .335, despite a lousy .228 batting average. He’s just 26, bats left and plays all over the diamond, but with no power and poor contact ability he’s had a hard time landing a bench job. The Phillies signed Machado out of Venezuela in 1998, and gave him his first big league callup in 2003. He’s played in the big leagues for the Reds and Rockies, too, but has garnered just 68 big league at-bats.
New York Yankees
Signed: 2B Bernie Castro, SS Cody Ransom
Signed: RHP Chris Farley
Outrighted off 40-man roster: RHP Josh Sharpless
St. Louis Cardinals
Signed: RHP Dewon Brazelton, RHP John Wasdin, C Mark Johnson
San Diego Padres
Signed: RHP Adam Bass, 2B Edgar Gonzalez
Though it took Gonzalez (not to be confused with the Diamondbacks righthander of the same name) six years to get there, he’s been a steady Triple-A performer since reaching the level for a cup of coffee in 2005. The 29-year-old has batted .330/.398/.475 for New Orleans, Albuquerque and Memphis while playing second and third base. Drafted in the 30th round from San Diego State by the Devil Rays in 2000, Gonzalez has twice been minor league Rule 5′d—by the Rangers in 2003 and by the Expos a year later.
San Francisco Giants
Outrighted off 40-man roster: RHP Scott Atchison
Granted free agency: RHP Scott Atchison
Signed: OF Prentice Redman
Tampa Bay Devil Rays
Signed: SS Andy Cannizaro
Traded: OF Delmon Young, SS Brendan Harris and OF Jason Pridie to Twins for RHP Matt Garza, RHP Eduardo Morlan and SS Jason Bartlett
Outrighted off 40-man roster: LHP Jon Switzer
Signed: LHP Carlos Perez
Toronto Blue Jays
Signed: LHP Jo Matumoto
Signed: OF Tommy Murphy
