The Phillies landed Brad Lidge along with infielder Eric Bruntlett from the Astros in exchange for outfielder Michael Bourn, third baseman Mike Costanzo and righthander Geoff Geary on Wednesday night, bolstering the Philadelphia bullpen while sending two players in the Phillies’ top 10 to Houston.
The Phillies’ top pick in 2005 out of Coastal Carolina, Costanzo batted .270/.368/.490 with 27 homers in 508 at-bats during the regular season at Double-A Reading in 2007.
We caught up with Costanzo, who grew up in the Philadelphia area and is currently playing in the Arizona Fall League:
Baseball America: We just got the news.
Mike Costanzo: Yeah, how about that? I’m an Astro.
BA: And you grew up a Phillies fan. A little taken back when you got the call?
MC: I’m still in shock. I mean, I grew up in Philly, I was raised a Philly fan and I’ll always root for Philly teams, but now I’m part of a new organization that really wanted me and I’m going to give them everything I have, everything I am. I’ll still root for the Eagles, but everyone in my family just became huge Astros fans.
BA: (Astros GM) Ed Wade scouted for the Padres a lot in the Eastern League this season, and he must have seen something in you to want to include you in this deal.
MC: He was at a ton of games and everybody was always talking about it whenever he was in the stands. As a player, you can’t really care too much. You just know that he was the former GM in Philly and having someone like that watching you is something you think about, but you really can’t let that get in your head. A lot of people are watching you–especially in Reading. That place is packed every night.
BA: You sound pretty amped up. How excited are you right now?
MC: I’m really fired up. It took a little time to get over the fact that I won’t be a Phillie. I mean, I grew up watching that team in the Vet and Citizen’s Bank (Park) is unbelievable. I’m just thrilled to go to Houston right now. This might be the best thing for my career. It’s a great organization.
BA: What do you know about Texas?
MC: I know it’s a lot different than anything I’m used to, but I’m up for that challenge. Never in my life did I ever consider being traded, but it’s something you deal with and move on. I’m an Astro now. And my phone is ringing off the hook right now. It’s ridiculous.
