The Orioles moved to protect two hard-throwing relievers who spent time with Double-A Bowie by adding them to their major league roster. McCrory, 25, was hitting 97 mph consistently in the Arizona Fall League and showing a very good slider, helping him to six strikeouts in his first 5 2/3 innings. The 24-year-old Deza, who signed from the Dominican in 1999, can touch 94-95. He’s pitching in the Dominican League.

From Brewers correspondent Tom Haudricourt: Jones, the Brewers’ first-round pick in 2001, was designated for assignment to open a spot on the 40-man roster when catcher Eric Munson was claimed on waivers from the Astros. Jones, who missed all of 2005 while recovering from multiple shoulder surgeries, made just six appearances with Double-A Huntsville (2-2, 5.08) before undergoing Tommy John surgery in May.

Alen, a former Marlins farmhand, was rated as the No. 3 prospect in the independent leagues last season. The 22-year-old showed consistent 1.85 second pop times for Winnipeg last year and displayed a solid bat for the first time after spending most of his career as a good-glove, no-hit backstop. Alen finished eighth in the Northern League with a .330 batting average.

Four months after being the first to foray into China, the Yankees became the first organization to sign players from the Israeli Baseball League. Rees, 23, and catcher Eladio Rodriguez, 28, signed with the Yankees following the IBL season. Rodriguez, winner of the league’s MVP for hitting .461 with 16 homers, signed as a nondrafted free agent in 1998 with the Red Sox, for whom he spent seven seasons. He appeared in last week’s transactions.

Risser was the No. 8 prospect in the independent leagues last year. The 22-year-old went 4-2, 1.09 with six saves in 50 innings with the Frontier League’s Washington Wild Things while showcasing an 87-91 mph fastball and a tight mid-80s slider.

A 14th-round pick in 2006, Scobee took advantage of the favorable hitting conditions at Nevada and in the Western Athletic Conference to rank second in NCAA Division I in both slugging percentage (.847) and on-base plus slugging percentage (1.385) that same year. Scobee hit .208/.325/.380 in 279 at-bats, spread over two years, for short-season Auburn, striking out 131 times in 97 games.
