I am a boston fan and have been watching Mark Wagner. last year BA had him rated as the best defensive catcher for Boston, if you compare him to the rest of Minor's.

Glad to see a post on this - this is tough info to find.

1. While listing everyone's SB/CS data in this blog entry would have been excessive, would including it as a downloadable file at the end of the report (or elsewhere) be an option?
2. I believe your first list should include Norfolk's J.R. House (don't have his numbers handy, but I believe he caught about a quarter of those who ran against him and allowed a relatively high number of SBA).

Adam, I have not looked at how a player’s caught stealing percentages translate from the minor leagues translates into the major leagues, so I’m not sure I can answer your question. There is clearly a difference in the percentages between the major league and the Triple-A level, which is a byproduct of several factors I won’t get into detail over here. Remember, these numbers are just part of the picture... catchers may have to switch positions for reasons other than their ability to control the running game.

Arencibia threw out 33.8% of runners in 77 attempts. He played in the short-season New York-Penn League, so he was not included in this research.

I think it's also notable that most of BA's midseason top 10 guys appear on track to be average big league catchers when it comes to throwing out runners.

Ben, aside from Towles and Conger are there any of BA's midseason Top 10 catchers who you are seriously worried about moving off of the position due to their lack of ability to throw out base runners alone?

Does anyone know JP Arencibia's CS%, or where we can get those? Maybe I'll find them on the stat pages...CS% stats on the newly drafted people would be good too.

Good stuff Ben. It's definitely interesting to see that every one of BA's midseason top 10 catching prospects besides Teagarden is below-average when it comes to catching base stealers.

[...] <erik butting in>-caught this over at BA, found it surprising considering the good reports we heard about Bryan Anderson’s arm last year. His % of caught stealing was only .268, .0567 below the league average. His OPS is only .015 points better then what Yadi has at the big league level, and he allowed 15 passed balls. Perhaps we’ve gotten too excited about him. </erik butting out> [...]
