Team’s Best Pitcher: RHP Jair Jurrjens, 7-5, 3.20 in 112 2/3 IP with 94-31 K-BB

At age 27, Kratz and Van Every were just a touch old for the league. Bowker was 24, but the 2004 third-round pick from Long Beach State had the breakthrough year the Giants had been waiting for. Pearce battered high Class A and Triple-A pitchers, too, but might have made his biggest impact in the EL.

You have to go back to the 2003 Prospect Handbook to find Torres’ name, but here he is atop the IL and EL speed score lists. A fourth-round pick of the Tigers in 1998, Torres also has spent time in the White Sox, Rangers and Twins organizations before returning home. The 25-year-old Velez led the league with 49 stolen bases (and finished second with nine triples) despite jumping to Double-A from low Class A, learning a new position (center field) and not starting his season until May 20.

Prospect central. Buchholz, Kennedy, Liz, Horne and Masterson all had huge years. Maloney continued to dominate after his trade to the Reds, too. Romero’s presence is something of a shock, seeing as he went 3,6, 4.89 with 51 walks for the Fisher Cats. And then there’s comeback kid Bobby Brownlie, who started the year in the independent Atlantic League.

It’s just 58 innings, but batters had a devil of a time lifting the ball against Masterson. Coupled with his strikeout percentage, that’s a very good sign. Litsch, Jurrjens and Kendrick have enjoyed varying degrees of big league success because of their groundball ways.

Best Run Differential: Huntsville: +70 (finished first in Northern Division at 75-62)
Fun Fact: Though Huntsville hit the fewest home runs in the league, OF Brendan Katin led the league in that category (24) and in RBIs (94). He was the only Star to hit more than 11 bombs.

Dubious Distinction: Barons RHP Jack Egbert and LHPs Gio Gonzalez and Ryan Wing finished 3-4-5 in the ERA race (and Gonzalez and Egbert 1-2 in strikeouts), but Birmingham’s offense was dead-last in both on-base (.317) and slugging (.360) percentage.

It’s not surprising to see Bonifacio, the league’s stolen base champ, on this list. What is surprising is how low he ranked. Perez had a very nice all-around year, but it’s another young Devil Ray, Pridie, who keeps popping up on these lists. Both are Rule 5 draft-eligible if they are not protected on the 40-man roster. Two Braves, Lillibridge and Jones, were able to do similar things in the IL.

Observers thought Egbert’s raw stuff was just OK, but he keeps the ball on the ground and controls the strike zone. Triple-A awaits.

You just can’t say enough about the year Rasmus had. He persevered through a rough start to lead the league in home runs, and he’s just 21. Headley clubbed nearly 20 more extra-base hits than he did in the Cal League in 2006. The switch-hitter won the league’s MVP award.

Faison, Greenberg and Webster have been pros for a while, but Flores, 21, was a fourth-round pick from Triton (Ill.) JC in 2005. He’s hit as he’s moved up, so he’s one to keep an eye on, and the rare piece of good news for the Astros organization.

Rasmus earned Steve Finley and Shawn Green comparisons coming out of high school in Alabama, and he’s living up to them while keeping pace with the uber-talented 2005 draft class.

A very encouraging list for Rangers fans. Granted the TL is just an eight-team league, but placing Volquez, Hurley and Galarraga in the top 11 is impressive. Hochevar, the first overall pick in 2006, was very efficient in Double-A and found his groove in Triple-A over the course of his final four starts. He carried that over with six scoreless innings in his first two big league outings.

Signed from the Dominican Republic in 2003, Deduno had a very strong season, ranking first here and ninth in strikeout percentage. He’s 24. Seeing Garcia here is no surprise—he has a nasty sinker—but coupled with his strikeout exploits, he had a very good follow-up to his 2006 campaign. Also of note, the Rockies charted seven of the 25 pitchers here—including some of their premium guys like Reynolds, Lo, Morales and Deduno—perhaps in preparation for Coors Field. At the very least, they’ll be ready for Colorado Springs, which has the highest elevation in the minors.
