A lingering hand injury has ended Mets prospect Fernando Martinez’ season prematurely.
Martinez, who has been out since June 23 because of the injury, made a pair of rehab appearances with the Gulf Coast League Mets last week but was forced to leave the second game because of hand pain. At that point the Mets decided to shut down Martinez for the remainder of the season.
Martinez, the Mets No. 2 prospect heading into the season, was hitting .271/.336/.377 in 236 at-bats with Binghamton before being shut down. Even when he did play he was bothered by the injury for most of the season.
