One game after breaking the International League’s 95-year-old record with a 43-game hitting streak, Brandon Watson’s historic run came to an end.
What had been one of Watson’s greatest strengths throughout the streak, his ability to put the ball in play by rarely striking out, deserted him in an 0-for-5 performance in which he struck out three times. Watson previously had struck out in fewer than 10 percent of his plate appearances this season.
Watson’s Columbus Clippers still managed to come away with the 6-0 victory in Rochester.
Watson’s streak is the longest minor league hitting streak in 53 years, and he is tied for the eighth-longest hitting streak in minor league history. The longest streak in minor league history belongs to Joe Wilhoit, who accomplished a 69-game hitting streak for Wichita in 1919.
