Just hours after Lancaster’s Bubba Bell was shut out in the home run derby, the California League’s second leading home run hitter saved face by keying a 10-5 Cal League rout over the Carolina League and took home MVP honors in the two leagues’ 11th annual all-star game at Stockton’s Banner Island Ballpark.

Bell, whose 16 homers are second only to Lancaster teammate Aaron Bates‘ 17, went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored and helped key a three-run second inning with a two-run, two-out single.

Inland Empire righthander James McDonald picked up the win by pitching one shutout inning with a strikeout. Salem righthander Brad James had a rough night and took the loss, yielding three earned runs on two hits and four walks in one inning.

Notable Performances By California League Prospects

Lake Elsinore second baseman Matt Antonelli went 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs. Lake Elsinore first baseman Kyle Blanks went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Stockton designated hitter Anthony Recker hit the only double for the Cal League and went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Lake Elsinore third baseman David Freese went 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Bakersfield outfielder Christopher Davis, who does not rank on too many depth charts, hit the only home run of the night for the Cal League and went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Lake Elsinore lefthander Wade Leblanc started the game and pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts.

Notable Performances By Carolina League Prospects

The Carolina League all-stars managed just seven hits for the game and three came from a player who officially no longer plays in the league. Aaron Cunningham, who on Saturday was traded by the White Sox to the Diamondbacks, went 3-for-3. Lynchburg designated hitter Jason Delaney had a big night for the Carolina League, going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and two RBIs.

Wilmington righthander Rowdy Hardy, the Carolina League ERA leader, earned the start for the Carolina League and pitched a scoreless inning, yielding only a hit and a walk.

Kinston’s Chris Gimenez, who is second in the Carolina League with 15 home runs, claimed the home run derby title.
