[...] Who is Jeff Luhnow? He is the St. Louis Cardinals’ vice president of amateur scouting and player development, and Baseball America’s Chris Kline has done a fantastic interview with him: I’ve had scouts come in and participate in our player-development discussions about who’s going to make a certain team and who’s not. I’ve had player development people go out and look at some of the top (amateur) prospects in Florida and other places. Part of communication is empathizing a little bit with the other side’s job. It’s so easy for a scout to criticize player development for making a bad decision, especially if it’s your player they’re letting go or your player they’ve changed his mechanics. Likewise it’s easy for a player development person to say, ‘Where are these players coming from? Why aren’t we getting better players?’ [...]

But the thing is the Cardinals aren't the only club taking this approach, Robert. And no matter what you might disagree with, you have to admit the whole concept of bringing the field and scouting staff together to better verse them in Latin America is visionary. Oh, and Luhnow's only been in his current role overseeing all these departments since the offseason . . . you know, the one in which St. Louis has been shining up World Series rings?

When Jeff Luhnow starts producing consistently more major league players than other organizations, his business jargon may sound more intelligent and applicable. As it stands, the Cardinals system is one of the barest in baseball and he has been on the job since 2003.That's plenty of time to start seeing the fruits of his business background training applied to baseball.I dont think the other organizations are shaking in their boots with the change in direction of the Cardinals player development philosophy and implementation.I find it odd that a Major League franchise would entrust the most sensitive and important area of it's operation to a man who had no experience whatsoever in the game before he was anointed king of the scouting and player development system.Scary
