In His Own Words, Kurt Kemp

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla.–In case you might have been asking yourself, “So has the Braves’ plan changed at all to move Jarrod Saltalamacchia from behind the plate now that Brian McCann just signed a six-year deal?”

We’re here to help.

Here is what Braves first-year farm director Kurt Kemp had to say on the Salty subject on Saturday:

“As of today it’s still the same plan and that is we still think Jarrod is an outstanding catching prospect that is going to be an outstanding catcher at the major league level. Our job is to continue to develop him in that capacity.

“I think many times a player would get moved because you don’t think he can be that—whatever it might be. That is surely not the case at this time with Jarrod. You can’t totally make decisions at the minor league level based on what’s happened at the major league level. You have to prepare guys as they come up.

“We feel like Edgar Renteria is an excellent major league shortstop, but we also think we have some excellent prospects at the minor league level. We wouldn’t move them off of shortstop because we have a very fine shortstop in Edgar. The concept is the same for me.

“The reason people ask is because they’re both so young. Brian’s such a young catcher and he’s now signed the deal and now here’s a guy a couple years behind him . . . I think we continue to do that same things we’ve done and that’s help Jarrod become the best catcher he can be.”

To compare Renteria to McCann is nuts. Edgar’s not signed for six years and is almost ten years older than McCann. The Braves will nee Saltalamacchia’s bat once Andruw Jones leaves, and the only way to get it in the lineup will be by moving him or McCann to another position.
