Based on an apparent error in the minor league baseball database, Mets prospect Fernando Martinez was listed as having a birthday of December 10, 1986 on his player page at minor league baseball’s website. Obviously, this would mean he is 20 years old and not the 18-year-old phenom that he was believed to be.
If this were true, it would certainly dim his prospect status. You can breathe out Mets fans, because it is not true.
When reached by phone this morning, Mets farm director Adam Wogan reaffirmed that Martinez was born on October 10, 1988. An official with MLB has acknowledged the error and it will be corrected.

Phew . . . I would have been happier if this had been a story about Jose Tabata, but it’s good to know this was just a mistake.

Posted by lister | February 5, 2007 at 12:11 pm | ShortcutMan, the entire Mets blog fan base when nuts this morning for a few hours after Metsblog pointed this out, it was pretty wild. Good to know it was just a typo, we can all breath a sigh of relief.
