The draft is less than a month away, which means I'm swamped with calls and reports. This week's Varsity Vignette is going to be short and sweet. Here are some quick hits with links about recent happenings in high school baseball. Enjoy.
• Last season, lefthander Patrick Schuster was getting national attention after throwing four consecutive no-hitters. His bid for a fifth aired on ESPNews, but he was unsuccessful. This year it's John Kukuruda, a righthander for East Nicolaus High in Trowbridge, Calif. He's thrown four straight no-hitters to break the state record and puts himself on the list with seven others in the country that have done the same.
• Bonanza High (Las Vegas) slugger Kris Bryant joined this season's 20-homer club last week. Another member of that club, catcher Ethan Bennett at Farragut High in Knoxville, set the national record with a home run in 10 straight games. But that record is in danger as Bryan Soloman, a third baseman at Jackson (N.J.) High, has a home run in nine consecutive games. He'll go for his 10th in a postseason game Tuesday, May 10.
• Marcus High (Flower Mound, Texas) junior righthander is getting some attention in Dallas after throwing a two-hitter against No. 2 Heritage High of Colleyville, Texas, knocking them out of a national title run.
