Far From Savory

While Rice advanced to the finals of the Conference USA tournament today with a 20-9 win over Memphis, Rice junior lefty Joe Savery was unimpressive.

He was lifted in the sixth inning after allowing six earned runs off nine hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

“That was it?” asked a scout based in the Southeast after watching Savery for the first time today. “I know he’s played first base for four games and was saved to come in for the second game of a doubleheader, but if you’re a first-rounder, I generally am expecting a little bit more.

“He was 90-91 and started to get feel for his changeup, but he was pushing it more than anything and he couldn’t throw his breaking ball for a strike. Here’s a lefthanded guy who’s big and strong, and to his credit, he seems to be able to make a pitch to get out of jams, but I think his delivery needs an overhaul . . . He lands closed, comes across his body and today he really struggled to throw strikes, and when he did, there weren’t many pitches spotted in the zone where he wanted them.

“He’s facing Memphis, and their hitters looked like there were beach balls coming up there.”

To say that Savery is “unimpressive” is like saying that your favorite 5-star restaurant that you have gone to for years is horrible. You can’t judge something on one episode. Savery has put up the numbers both pitching and hitting. I don’t disagree that he could, at times, use some fine tuning. As a Rice fan and a former college catcher I am extremely critical of him. He has the goods. Scouts are in the business of getting the best players they can at the lowest cost….so it makes sense not to sing his praises too loud!!

Savery was a Top Prospect coming into this year as a pitcher and hitter. Seeing how he hasn’t done a whole lot with the Bat this year and injury issues have kept him off the mound, whats his draft status as of now? And, with a great postseason, could he get back to where he was pre-injury?

Hasn’t done a lot with a bat? Not that it matters for a guy who’s being sought as a pitchter, but he’s hitting .364 with a .995 OPS.

As far as his pitching goes, his Ks have been down this year, but he still gets the outs, puts up the numbers, and, for the most part, keeps the ball on the ground. His BAA is .239 and his opponents’ OPS is .646.
