Yankees Sign Cotham For $675,000

The Yankees have signed Vanderbilt righthander Caleb Cotham for $675,000. His bonus is $5,000 short of the highest in the fifth round this year (Jeff Malm, Rays) and is more than four times MLB’s $149,400 recommendation for his draft slot (No. 165).

A draft-eligible sophomore, Cotham boosted his stock by not allowing a run in 13 innings this summer with the Cape Cod League’s Brewster Whitecaps. After being bothered by a sore knee during the spring, he pitched at 91-94 mph with his fastball and flashed a plus slider on the Cape.

Do you expect the Yankees to sign heathcott and Murphy?

Re Heathcott/Murphy: Yes. I think they have several deals done or all but done that they’re sitting on.

Speaking of 5th rounders and signing them for overslot, do you see the Mets signing Magnifico? I heard he was looking for a 7-figure bonus but that might have changed.

Heard the same on Magnifico before the draft but have heard nothing either way since.

Jim, thanks for taking the time to answer questions. Do you see any of Chad Thompson, Cody Stiles, Aaron Meade, Tyler Lyons, Kyle McKenzie, Evan DeLuca. or Brett Bruening signing? Thanks.

According to a few credible yankee blogs and Slade’s facebook page, both he and JR Murphy have signed.

Keyvius Sampson has signed with the Padres. Any word on the bonus number beyond what the Ocala paper is reporting?

@ Sam…

I am told that Mitchell and Thompson are locks to sign. Also pretty likely that Stiles and/or DeLuca will sign or have signed already.

Meade, Lyons, MacKenzie are going to school… Not sure on Bruening
