Jays Sign Webb For $450,000

The Blue Jays have yet to sign their supplemental first-rounder, second-rounder and two third-rounders, but they have made a significant signing. Toronto agreed to terms with 18th-round pick Daniel Webb on a $450,000 bonus. That ties for the second-highest bonus known after the 10th round so far this year, and is three times MLB’s recommended $150,000 maximum after the fifth round.

Webb had the potential to go in the sandwich round as a Kentucky high school senior in 2008, but dropped to the Diamondbacks in the 12th round because of signability. The righthander turned down Arizona and attended Northwest Florida State JC this spring, where his fastball touched 94 mph. He did battle inconsistency with his secondary pitches and command.

We all knew alot of this would come down to the final day but even so it is still a bit nerving. If Max Stassi did decide to attend UCLA would the A’s consider offering an over the slot deal to Mike Zunino as a sort of back up plan?

Quick note: Once the deals start flying today, I’m not going to try to keep up with the questions. Re Stassi/Zunino: I suppose that could happen, but I think Stassi will sign.

I really appreciate these updates; thanks.
Per chance, have you heard anything on Dan Fields or Blake Hauser?

I didn’t think the Jays had it in them to go over slot for Webb – I’m pleasantly surprised.

Re Fields/Hauser: Have not heard much. Fields’ asking price is believed to be seven figures, and the Tigers have several expensive guys to sign, so we’ll see.

Thanks again, Jim.

Hey Jim, Keith Law apparently stated this morning that the Jays look to be likely to sign Marisnick but that Eliopoulous(sp?) looks to be heading to Long Beach State or JUCO? Kind of weird because I always assumed that Eliop would be the MOST LIKELY to sign out of the HS kids drafted by the Jays.
