In addition to signing eighth-rounder Colton Cain for $1.125 million today, the Pirates also landed fourth-rounder Zack Dodson for $600,000. Dodson’s bonus was more than twice MLB’s bonus recommendation of $261,000 for the 115th overall pick.
A lefthander from Medina Valley HS (Castroville, Texas) and the top prospect in Baylor’s recruiting class, Dodson shows a 91-92 mph fastball and a solid curveball when he keeps his delivery in sync. He’s an athletic 6-foot-1, 190-pounder who would have been a two-way player for the Bears had he made it to college.
