Catching Up With Tommy Joseph & Jake Barrett

Horizon High catcher Tommy Joseph was rumored as a possible late first-rounder, but was selected by the Giants in the second round, 55th overall. Joseph has a great arm and offers big-time raw power, ranking 70 on the 20-80 scale.

"I mean, I was kind of obviously freaking out —I didn’t know what was going to happen," Joseph said. "My agent was telling me stuff. He told me 55, so when I heard my name called I was very relieved and got to relax and hug everyone."

Joseph said the Giants have been interested in him all spring. If he signs, Joseph will join an organization that drafted righthander Tim Alderson from the same high school in the first round in 2007. Joseph keeps in touch with Alderson and looks forward to reuniting with his former teammate.

"That would definitely be a very sweet privilege, for sure," Joseph said. "I’ll get to catch him in the offseason and stuff, but if I get to catch him in the minor leagues or even the big leagues, that would be the most extraordinary thing. I caught him in high school, but to get drafted by the same team two years later and catch him down the road would be outstanding.

"He called me right after I was picked. He was watching on his computer in Connecticut and called me right away. He said, ‘First of all, congratulations. You’ve worked very hard to get where you’re at. I’m glad I don’t have to pitch to you ever again and hopefully I’ll see you down the road.’ We’re good friends and we’ve known each other for four years now. He texts me after starts and I text him after high school games. We’re pretty good buddies. I’ve looked up to him for four years now and to play in the same organization he’s in, it’ll be nice because he’s gone through what I’m about to go through. So, that’ll be nice."

Righthander Jake Barrett and his Desert Ridge Jaguars defeated Joseph’s Horizon Huskies for Arizona’s 5-A-II state championship and Barrett was a third-round selection by the Blue Jays.

"It’s very exciting," Barrett said about being selected. "We’re having a party. As soon as I got picked, I was very excited because I know the Blue Jays are a great organization. I’m just waiting to see how it all pans out right now."
