If you believe piratesprospects.com, the Pirates are offering bonus money to many unsigned LOWER round draft choices. The feeling ,according to the article, is that the Pirates are pretty much working under the impression that Appel isn't going to sign. This means someone like Buehler (14th) may be recipient of 2nd round money if the Pirates decide to go that direction.
You have to wonder what Thomas and Ross are thinking at this point. Pirates seemingly wanted both to sign under slot. Both have options to go/return to school next year. Pirates may have to make a call on Appel a few hours BEFORE deadline. My guess is by 3 PM, Appel will be signed for just under 3.9 Mill or the Pirates will have announced their intent to not sign Appel.Otherwise, Pirates stand to lose quite a few talented players.
