Senior Signs Stand Out This Year

As we wrote during the draft, teams targeted seniors in the early rounds at a significantly higher rate than in other recent drafts, now we can point out exactly how significant it was. In the previous four drafts from 2008-2011, an average of 30 college seniors were drafted in the first 10 rounds. This year that number nearly doubled to 57. From 2008-2011, the most seniors drafted in a single round was eight, which occurred in the ninth round in 2010. In rounds 7-10 of the 2012 draft, nine or more seniors were drafted in each of those rounds. The number of seniors drafted in rounds 8-10 of the 2012 draft surpasses or ties the total from every draft since 2008.

Good Morning,

What type of effect will this drafting of seniors do to college baseball?  Obviously more high schoolers will look to play college ball since not as many were drafted in the top rounds and my concern is that college baseball will become more like football and basketball where college athlete professionalism is a major issue.  I have already written a piece on conference realignment and the BCS and my research on football heightens that concern for college baseball.  With the limits place by the slot bonus funds for these teams it seems reasonable that, with less money being offered, players faced with less lucrative financial options will opt to go to college making it a de facto minor league for MLB.  A side concern is what that will do to the minor league system.  What are your thoughts on these issues?

Cheers,
