David Dahl was a mistake, at least at no. 10. He's not the talent that Lucas Gioloto, Michael Wacha or Richie Shaffer are and can't offer what those three brought to the table. Obviously there were some serious concerns about Gioloto for him to fall to 16 but the Nationals felt strong enough about him to add him to the Strasburg-Harper-Zimmerman-Rendon mix.
I think that's a bold, courageous, brilliant move. The Nationals look smart day and they will down the road even if Gioloto no longer can touch a 100. If he can pitch at 93-96 again with excellent stuff, he was a steal at 16.
The Rockies desperately need a productive bat with power or top-line pitcher and they passed on Gioloto, a distressed property that could have been fixed up for a big profit.
Wacha, with just his fastball-changeup could be a very good reliever and if he can develop a usable slider, he fits into a rotation well.
Shaffer can either play at third (if Nolan Arenado were to be moved to first) or first (Todd Helton can see the finish line) and hit for power the lineup needs.
I would even leaned to Nick Travieso over Dahl, whom I see as a fringe starter or fourth outfielder.
The Rockies have erred again in an enviable draft position.
