Rockies Select David Dahl

The Rockies play in baseball's biggest outfield at Coors Field. Alabama prep outfielder David Dahl should have the speed to feel at home.

The Rockies drafted Dahl with the 10th overall pick; he ranks 12th on the BA 500. The Rockies haven't taken a prep outfielder this high since 1998, when they took Choo Freeman.

Dahl earns comparisons to players from Colby Rasmus to Andy Van Slyke for his tools, which include above-average hitting ability, 60 speed on the 20-80 scale and a cannon throwing arm. Scouts dinged the Birmingham, Ala., prep for his baseball motor and his power, which requires some projection, but some scouts expect him to hit for above-average power eventually, and he has good baseball instincts.

You can see video of Dahl here.

Not even close to Andy van. Van different beast and ha that edge to be a leader.

My comp came from an actual scout. Not making this stuff up.

I know your not.

Thanks, and thanks for the interaction. We do appreciate it.

David Dahl was a mistake, at least at no. 10. He's not the talent that Lucas Gioloto, Michael Wacha or Richie Shaffer are and can't offer what those three brought to the table. Obviously there were some serious concerns about Gioloto for him to fall to 16 but the Nationals felt strong enough about him to add him to the Strasburg-Harper-Zimmerman-Rendon mix.
I think that's a bold, courageous, brilliant move. The Nationals look smart day and they will down the road even if Gioloto no longer can touch a 100. If he can pitch at 93-96 again with excellent stuff, he was a steal at 16.
The Rockies desperately need a productive bat with power or top-line pitcher and they passed on Gioloto, a distressed property that could have been fixed up for a big profit.
Wacha, with just his fastball-changeup could be a very good reliever and if he can develop a usable slider, he fits into a rotation well.
Shaffer can either play at third (if Nolan Arenado were to be moved to first) or first (Todd Helton can see the finish line) and hit for power the lineup needs.
I would even leaned to Nick Travieso over Dahl, whom I see as a fringe starter or fourth outfielder.
The Rockies have erred again in an enviable draft position.
