With the third overall pick, the Mariners selected Florida catcher Mike Zunino. The Mariners are loaded with pitching prospects and needed offensive contributors. While the team would have loved a shot at the toolsy high school prospects who went before them, Zunino is a solid choice who could move through the minor league system quickly.
The knock on Zunino is that he doesn't have a plus tool. It might be above-average power—he ranks 13th in home runs this year and second in doubles with 27—but the rest of his tools are average across the board. Zunino's tools play up because of his baseball IQ, toughness and leadership. Zunino's father Greg has been a scout for more than 20 years, so he's grown up around the game.
