Most college aces—such as the righthanders at the top of the BA Top 200 draft prospects list, Stanford's Mark Appel, LSU's Kevin Gausman and San Francisco's Kyle Ziimmer—pitch on Friday nights. To study the hitters in the college class, we decided to take a look at how the college hitters from the Top 200 did during the opening game of a weekend series.
The assumption made in this study is college coaches use their best pitcher on Fridays. Now that’s not always the case, and there are many differences between competition levels and playing environments that factor into the equation, especially with such a small sample size.
Still, it’s interesting to examine and a few of the numbers really stand out. Clemson third baseman Richie Shaffer walked 21 times in the opening game of a weekend series, while Stanford third baseman/outfielder Stephen Piscotty didn’t draw a single walk in those games.
Of Florida catcher Mike Zunino’s 19 hits in the opening game of a weekend series, 61 percent of them went for extra bases. His .310/.354/.603 line on Friday nights looks better than his .255/.336/.509 line in Southeastern Conference play this season.
The following chart was compiled with the help of Baseball America intern John Sandberg. One Saturday game was included in Richie Shaffer’s statistics to include a start against North Carolina State freshman Carlos Rodon, and an extra game was included in Zunino’s line to include a start against Kevin Gausman, since the spirit of the study is to look at how hitters do against the best pitchers.

Where is the rest of the table at? It says Top 200 college hitters, but there are only 32 displayed.
Posted by Andrew | May 25, 2012 at 9:59 am | ShortcutAndrew, it’s referring to the college hitters that are in the Draft Top 200. Not the top 200 hitters in college baseball.

Posted by John | May 30, 2012 at 5:59 pm | ShortcutAh well that would seem to make more sense.
Posted by Andrew | May 31, 2012 at 1:45 pm | ShortcutVery interesting concept for evaluating how pro prospects in college ranks might fair at the next level! Wish a broader cross-section of players could be included, but maybe pulling data is more labor intensive than it seems.
Posted by chip | June 12, 2012 at 5:47 pm | ShortcutAdam Brett Walker (3rd Rd Pick/Twins) is at the top of the list in average. I know he plays in ASUN and quality of conference pitching is always questioned, despite Chris Sale and many other ASUN pitchers being in the "Show" right now. Walker hit over .400 against ranked teams in his career and hit 9 for 18 against Florida State University with 5 Doubles and 2 HRs in his frist 5 game against them. This kid will hit for power and average at the next level despite the swing and misses everyone is so concerned about. .313 BA (Freshman) / .411 BA (Sophomore) & .343 BA (Junior) – Lifetime college BA of .359 – TRUST THE HISTORY and A THE LONE SEASON
