If a SS is the best player available (BPA), a team should pick him even if they already have a good SS. He could develop to be even better. Often, they end up moving to 2B or another position if they have a good enough bat. That gives them more flexibility if he can play SS but hit well enough to play other positions. Gives a team a lot of option of placing him on the team. Or, he could be a trading chip to get the prospect position that you really need. Lots of ways around it, and you never know, there are possible reasons why any player might not be available to you anymore, due to injury or whatnot. Fate.

Here's what Callis said about Giolito in the subscriber-only version: "Righthander Lucas Giolito, Fried's teammate at Harvard-Westlake HS in Studio City, Calif., remains the draft's biggest wild card after spraining an elbow ligament in March. He hasn't taken the mound since, though he threw on flat ground this week. Teams still don't feel like they have a great read on the health or signability of a player who once figured to be a lock to go in the first three picks. As we did in our initial first-round projection two weeks ago, we're not including Giolito because of the uncertainty surrounding him."
