Arizona State shortstop/outfielder Drew Maggi confirmed that he has signed with the Pirates for $468,000. The 15th-round pick got just over three times the recommended $150,000 maximum for picks after the fifth round. He's an important pick for the Pirates, who drafted pitchers with 12 of their first 15 selections. Maggi is the team's highest-drafted infielder and played on back-to-back College World Series teams with the Sun Devils, batting .326/.412/.444 as a draft-eligible sophomore.
He also stole 36 bases in 45 tries in 2010, and speed is his best tool. He's versatile defensively, and evaluators were mixed on whether he could stick in the middle infield or would have to move to center. He played outfield and shortstop for ASU. Scouts also laud his makeup.

Saw Drew Maggi @ UCLA on April 30. Good college player, and the ASU team was great to watch (no big guys but lots of very, very good college players), but not sure he will be a starting major league player. I hope I am wrong. The 2B for ASU, Zack MacPhee, was unreal, 5-8 & 172, but hit a ball off the wall vs. Gerrit Cole, UCLA's pitcher. It will be interesting to see where MacPhee goes next year. On performance, he should go in the second round.
