Righthander Ryan Hafner, a 17th-round pick, signed Monday with the Pirates for $450,000. That's the second-highest known bonus after the 10th round so far this year, trailing only the $500,000 the Reds gave 12th-rounder Kyle Waldrop.
A product of Lee's Summit (Mo.) West High, Hafner is extremely projectable at 6-foot-6 and 215 pounds. He throws an 87-90 mph fastball with little effort in his delivery, though his breaking ball needs refinement. He had committed to Missouri State.
