Nationals Add Ray For $799,000

Shortly after agreeing to terms on seven-figure deals with A.J. Cole and Sammy Solis, the Nationals have invested heavily in another pitcher. Washington has agreed with 12th-rounder Robbie Ray on a $799,000 bonus. That's the second-highest bonus after the fourth round so far this year, behind only the $800,000 the Mariners are giving 16th-rounder Jordan Shipers.

A lefthander from Brentwood (Tenn.) High, Ray slid in the draft after an inconsistent senior season. His fastball reached the mid-90s and he showed some power to his breaking ball in showcases last fall, but worked more at 89-91 mph this spring. He had committed to Arkansas.
