The Mariners and 16th-round pick Jordan Shipers have agreed to terms on an $800,000 bonus. That's the largest deal after the fourth round so far this summer, and matches the bonus Seattle gave sandwich pick Taijuan Walker in mid-June.
Shipers is a product of South Harrison High (Bethany, Mo.), which doesn't have a baseball team, so he showcased his stuff by pitching in an Iowa wood-bat league in the spring and the California Collegiate League in the summer. A 5-foot-10, 160-pound lefthander, he throws an 89-90 mph fastball that touches 92, along with a slider than flashes depth and a solid changeup. He had committed to Missouri State, which also lost top starter Mike Kickham (Giants) and recruit Ryan Hafner (Pirates) in the last week.
