Evan Grant, who works for the Dallas Morning News and is Baseball America's Rangers correspondent, reports that Texas has signed second-round pick Cody Buckel for $590,000.
MLB's estimated bonus recommendation for Buckel's No. 72 slot is $506,700. The only player to have completed a deal further above MLB guidelines is Cubs second-rounder Reggie Golden, who signed for $157,500 above slot on Saturday. Buckel's bonus is the highest over slot for any pitcher thus far.
A righthander from Royal High (Simi Valley, Calif.), Buckel is just 6 feet and 170 pounds but has a fastball that peaks at 92-94 mph. He also shows the potential for three average or better secondary pitches. He had committed to Pepperdine.
The Rangers have now signed all of their choices in the first 13 rounds except for righthanders Luke Jackson (supplemental first round out of a Fort Lauderdale high school) and Justin Grimm (fifth round out of Georgia).
