The Orioles have signed 10th-round pick Clay Schrader for $300,000. That's the second-highest bonus after the fifth round this year, exceeded only by the $350,000 the Mets gave 24th-rounder Erik Goeddel. MLB recommends a maximum of $150,000 for all picks after the fifth round.
Schrader helped pitch San Jacinto (Texas) JC to the Junior College World Series, leading national juco pitchers with 16.0 strikeouts per nine innings and ranking sixth with 12 saves. A righthander, he has two pitches that can be devastating, a 91-95 mph fastball and a mid-80s slider. There are concerns about his size (6 feet, 190 pounds), arm action and maximum-effort delivery, but he has the type of power stuff that plays well in the late innings.
