The Cardinals signed Arizona State righthander Seth Blair, their supplemental first-round choice, for $751,500 on Friday. His bonus matches MLB's recommendation for his No. 46 draft slot. He's the first sandwich pick to sign since Taijuan Walker (Mariners) and Michael Olt (Rangers) on June 18.
Blair was Arizona State's No. 1 starter this spring, going 12-1, 3.64 with 108 strikeouts in 106 innings while helping the Sun Devils reach their second consecutive College World Series. His best pitch is his fastball, which sits at 92-94 mph, touches 97 and features riding and sinking life. His curveball, changeup and cutter are solid secondary pitches.
Blair is the only one of St. Louis' top four draft picks who has come to terms. The Cardinals are still negotiating with first-rounder Zack Cox, sandwich pick Tyrell Jenkins and second-rounder Jordan Swagerty.
