Bonuses Vs. Slots

I just finished putting together our annual bonuses vs. estimated MLB slots chart, which subscribers can access here.

MLB recommends specific bonuses for every pick in the first five rounds. With less than a month remaining before the Aug. 16 signing deadline, just nine players have received bonuses worth more than the estimated MLB guidelines:

Justin O'Conner, c, Rays (1st round, No. 31 overall):
$1.025 million bonus vs. $972,000 slot

Taijuan Walker, rhp, Mariners (1st round supp., No. 43 overall):
     $800,000 bonus vs. $789,300 slot

Vincent Velasquez, rhp, Astros (2nd round, No. 58 overall):
     $655,830 bonus vs. $624,600 slot

Micah Gibbs, c, Cubs (3rd round, No. 97 overall):
     $350,000 bonus vs. $346,500 slot

Jordan Akins, of, Rangers (3rd round, No. 103 overall):
     $350,000 bonus (two-sport deal) vs. $315,000 slot

Russell Wilson, of, Rockies (4th round, No. 140 overall):
     $200,000 bonus vs. $186,300 slot

Wes Mugarian, rhp, Reds (5th round, No. 157 overall):
     $198,000 bonus vs. $160,200 slot

Andy Wilkins, 1b, White Sox (5th round, No. 158 overall):
     $195,000 bonus vs. $158,400 slot

Heath Hembree, rhp, Giants (5th round, No. 168 overall):
     $185,000 bonus vs. $144,900 slot

After the fifth round, MLB recommends a maximum bonus of $150,000. Only one such player is known to have signed a finalized deal for more than $150,000:

Austin Brice, rhp, Marlins (9th round, No. 287 overall):
     $205,000 (two-sport deal)

Florida spread Brice's bonus over multiple years under MLB provisions for two-sport athletes, and MLB calculates the net present value of his deal at $195,214. Brice was an all-conference soccer player at Northwood High in Pittsboro, N.C.

Several other players may have agreed to over-slot deals with teams, such as Erik Goeddel with the Mets, but they haven't been formally approved yet.
