Any truth to the rumor that Hayden Simpson was going to be plucked mid-late first, and wouldn't have made it to the Cubs 2nd round pick?
Posted by Tony | June 7, 2010 at 11:46 pm | ShortcutThat’s a potential explanation, but there are other fish in the sea aren’t there?
Posted by John Manuel | June 7, 2010 at 11:49 pm | ShortcutFair enough John M.
First off, as usual, great work by you guys today.
As a Cubs fan, I think my feelings are that I'm shocked, stunned, but not terribly disappointed with the pick. A tad disappointed, because I really wanted to gamble on Justin O'Conner.
That said, the late comments from Wilken pre-draft suggested this was likely a college arm. There's a part of me that wonders if Wilken would draft this way if Hendry wasn't such a college oriented guy. It feels like (and correct me if I'm wrong) that his arsenal has a bit more upside than some of the college arms in the same range (seems like low-mid 90's fb, good curve, solid slider, decent change?). I feel like we drafted Jay Jackson (certainly, what has made the Jackson pick so great was the fact that he was a 9th rounder, so there is a difference).

Looking for my Twins to draft a 3B coming up, maybe Garin Checchini in round 2, or Tony Thompson, Derek Dietrich, or Rob Segedin in round 3. I also wouldn't mind seeing one of these three shortstops drafted by MN, Tony Wolters, Marcus Littlewood, or Dominic Ficociello. They got their closest to the majors pitcher in Alex Wimmers in round one. Now let's work on the left side of the infield.

Posted by Shawn | June 8, 2010 at 8:21 am | ShortcutDo you know what the status of Drew Poulk (NC State) is in the draft? I have been following the Wolfpack this year and he appears to be an outstanding player. Looking at his stats, he is one of the top hitters in the ACC and also made 2nd team all ACC. I would assume given the ACC had so many teams in the NCAA tournament, that the ACC was a pretty strong conference this year making the stats even more impressive. Thanks!
Posted by Austin | June 8, 2010 at 8:52 am | ShortcutI believe Hayden Simpson's selection by the Cubs will be talked about a lot. Hence, we have to remember who the Cubs took in the early 90's, a HS arm named Greg Maddux who in comparison to Hayden is about the same size with the same stuff and competitiveness. Perhaps only 2 losses in college D2 ball is laughed at, but what type of competition did Hayden play vs summer ball with wood bats? I think that may speak volumes.
Posted by Bill | June 8, 2010 at 9:24 am | ShortcutIf Simpson bombs it in pro ball, then Jim & Tim will be on the outs. If he progresses quickly, they will be declared geniuses!!!
Also new ownership could of played a part in this draft as well, trying to keep money in the real dynamic, instead of over spending?
All in due time will we see the effect of this selection!
Cory Brown may be the best overall position player in the draft and you folks didn't have him listed in the Mock Draft. You missed that one!
Posted by Brian | June 8, 2010 at 11:15 am | ShortcutActually should be Gary Brown, my mistake.
