Here are this season's Friday-night splits for every Division-I college hitter that entered the year on Baseball America's Top 100 list.
While not always the case, in general, college teams throw their aces on Friday nights. On average, hitters will face better velocity on Friday nights than any other night of the week. At the very least, Friday night starters will be around the strike zone. But, while the data might provide a little insight into how a hitter has done against better competition, it should be taken with a pretty sizable grain of salt, for a few reasons:
1. Sample size. Simply put, 30-40 plate appearances is just far too small of a sample size from which to draw any real conclusions. Look no further than the MLB leaderboards to understand why. Does anyone really think Scott Podsednik and Ivan Rodriguez are going to win batting crowns this year?
2. Level of competition. Not all Friday starters are created equal. Cody Stanley at UNC Wilmington just isn't facing the same caliber of arms that Zack Cox and Andy Wilkins face at Arkansas.
3. Scheduling differences. Looking at how players hit on Fridays is a quick-and-dirty way to see how hitters are doing against some of the best pitchers they'll face in a given season (although it's a lot dirtier than it is quick). However, there are many reasons why it sometimes doesn't work out that way. Some teams play series on Thursday-Friday-Saturday; pitchers get hurt; some teams' best pitchers are Saturday starters, etc.
With those caveats out of the way, let's look at the numbers, with category leaders in bold:
