From what I remember reading, Covey did throw, though he was rusty apparently. He topped out around 92-93 which is slightly lower than normal, but you can probably attribute that to it being so early in the season. His curve I believe looked good, but he also apparently had some troubles locating both the curve and changeup and buried both pitches in the dirt a few times according to reports. I hope he shakes the rust off fast, he is one of my favorites to fly up draft boards assuming he is pitching like he did at the end of 09....

The reports on Velasquez are VERY exciting to hear. I wonder if he will look as good though in extended sample sizes. I want to hear more of him, but if reports are accurate and the glimpses scouts saw of him were not due to small sample size, I would say he looks like a 1st rounder. Especially if his fastball gains a few ticks as he gets more IP under his belt.

Covey was the first pitcher of the afternoon and, as usual, performed well. My notes show 2 K's and 2 groundouts in facing 4 hitters. Covey's fastball registered 91-93 with some sink, and he added an excellent 79 curve and 81 change. He added one pitch which looked like a split at 84. In this particular piece, I wanted to concentrate on pitchers who are not as well known, as opposed to outstanding pitchers like Covey who have been well publicized and are on everyone's radar.
