Yankees Sign Mitchell For $800,000

The Yankees have signed 16th-round pick Bryan Mitchell for $800,000. It’s the third-highest bonus after the 10th round this year, following Orioles signees Michael Ohlman ($995,000, 11th round) and Cameron Coffey ($990,000, 22nd round).

A righthander from Rockingham County High (Reidsville, N.C.), Mitchell throws a lively 90-91 mph fastball and a hard slider. He had committed to North Carolina.

Here we go again.When is this going to end.The Yankees draft a top unsignable player late and they sign him for well above the slot money range.Only in the MLB this happens.Because of this flawed system they were able to draft Austin Jackson in the eight round and sign him for 2nd round money.This is why they can sign three type A free agents and sign first round talent late.

Boo freaking hoo. D&F makes a ton of sense, even for cost-conscious teams like the Orioles and the Royals. The Yanks also had to pay extra for their top two picks largely because they lost Cole and Bittle last year and had no leverage, even though neither Heathcott nor Murphy were projected higher than they were picked. Pretty much everyone will exceed slot money for at least some of their picks.

Look at who the other teams have drafted and singed and the total amount of money that has been spent before you make an ignorant statement. The Yankees have not spent nearly as much money as many teams this year.

What nonsense. The entire major league system is rigged to penalize teams that try to win.

Picking towards the bottom of every round because of the punitive socialist draft, New York has no choice but to spend money where it can to improve.

This is the BIG LIE of Bud Selig. Eliminate the draft. let the Yankees and other good teams have equal access to good young players. Then they wouldn’t have to outspend everyone pn free agents, international signings and hard-to-sign draft picks. Every rle baseball has passed for 60 years has been designed to handcuff good teams. Their response to these ridculous rules is inevitable. And yet people foolishly complain.

Jack you are either a Red Sox fan or a complete idiot!!The Yankees are one of the richest and widely known franchises in sports. So tell me something… You are a prospect and you can be either drafted by the Royals, Marlins, Nationals, Pirates or Yankees. You choose the Yankees! I would. Also they didn’t spend the most in this draft…Also they didn’t set the bar this year for overspending on draft picks. Get your facts straight before you rip on the Yankees. The system isn’t flawed b/c the Nats were able to sign Straburgh for 15 mil. If it was flawed they wouldn’t have been able to sign him!! So thank the Yanks for the Nats being able to sign the kid!!
