Tigers Sign Turner

The Tigers have signed No. 9 overall pick Jacob Turner to a major league contract with a $4.7 million bonus (payable over six years, with $1.6 million paid in 2014) and a guaranteed value of $5.5 million. Depending on how quickly he reaches the majors, he could push the total value to nearly $7 million.

The raw bonus is a record for a high school pitcher.

I don’t have an official net present value as calculated by MLB, but it probably comes in around $5 million.

Does the major league contract means he has to be placed on the 40 man roster? If that is not what it means, can you explain the implications of giving a ‘major league’ deal?

Thanks!

Yo Frank, perhaps Jim or one of the other BA guys will come along eventually to answer your question (I imagine they are insanely busy now) but to answer your question the best I can…yes he is put on the 40 man roster.

The effect this has is each year he is on the 40 man roster, he loses an option year. Therefore when he finally reaches the majors, he can’t be sent back down without clearing waivers, that is if he comes up something like 4 or 5 years down the line. However if Turner comes up in the next few seasons, the Tigers will be able to use at least one or two of his options.

Hope that came out well (and correct), try googling it.

Ilitch is the man! Tigers sign Turner, Oliver, and Fields.

Turner is on the 40 man roster now.
