The Royals and Clemson lefthander Chris Dwyer have agreed to terms on a $1.45 million bonus. That’s a record for the fourth round, eclipsing the $1.3 million the Yankees gave Brad Suttle in 2007. It’s also well over MLB’s $240,300 recommendation for Dwyer’s slot (122nd overall).
The best freshman-eligible prospect in draft history, Dwyer is a quality athlete with a 90-94 mph fastball and hammer curveball. He came on strong at the end of the college season and turned in one brilliant outing with the Cape Cod League’s Cotuit Kettleers before taking the rest of the summer off.

Looks like the Rays have signed 5th rounder Jeff Malm. He agreed to the deal and it’s been submitted to the commissioner’s for approval, so no bonus numbers yet.
Posted by Kevin | August 13, 2009 at 2:45 pm | ShortcutThis is true. We’re not blogging deals until we confirm the deals, but Malm has agreed to terms with the Rays.
Posted by Jim Callis | August 13, 2009 at 2:52 pm | ShortcutJim, Have you heard anything about the Orioles signing Cameron Coffey, Michael Ohlman or Garrett Bush? Thanks

Posted by Ryan | August 13, 2009 at 3:19 pm | ShortcutFor weeks, there has been talk the Royals will sign Myers for around $2 million. Deal should be imminent.

Posted by patrick brady | August 13, 2009 at 3:53 pm | ShortcutFlorida?? Thought it would be an easy signing.
With all of the signing over slot moves, does it make signability and giving up draft picks for signing free agents a bit moot? If KC signs Dwyer in 3rd round for $1.45 million and Myers in 2nd for $2million, that is like having 3 first round picks in the top half of the draft.
Is this an area that MLB and Players Union will take action on in next negotiations?
Posted by Dave | August 13, 2009 at 4:02 pm | ShortcutHi Jim, I know the Astros inked alot of their guys early, but have you heard about any more signings by them? I know Draytons usually Buds lapdog, but Im hoping hell go over slot for a few. Thanks.
Posted by Logan | August 13, 2009 at 5:18 pm | ShortcutAny word on Garrett Gould of the Dodgers?
Posted by Matthew | August 13, 2009 at 6:55 pm | ShortcutRe Rogers: I think the Orioles have one more big signing in them, and it looks like Michael Ohlman (11th round) might be the favorite.
Posted by Jim Callis | August 13, 2009 at 8:45 pm | ShortcutRe Myers and Crow: Already answered about Myers above. Rumor is that the Royals are offering $3 million to Crow and he’s not biting yet.
Posted by Jim Callis | August 13, 2009 at 8:46 pm | ShortcutRe Coffey: He signed today. Check out this link. I’ll have more on him later, too.
Posted by Jim Callis | August 13, 2009 at 8:49 pm | ShortcutRe James: His asking price before the draft was $1.75 million. That’s still too high over slot (which is $1.422 million at No. 18) for the Marlins and/or MLB at this point.
Posted by Jim Callis | August 13, 2009 at 8:51 pm | ShortcutRe Dave’s question about over-slot signings: This is nothing new. Some teams have been manipulating the system like this for years, and kudos to the Royals for trying to get out of their rut. After years of being ignored, the draft should be near the forefront of the next collective bargaining negotiations.
Posted by Jim Callis | August 13, 2009 at 8:53 pm | ShortcutRe the Astros: They already have signed 24 of their top 25 picks and I’m not hearing much regarding them, so they could be done.
Posted by Jim Callis | August 13, 2009 at 8:55 pm | ShortcutRe Gould: Just that he’s looking for well above the $562,500 slot at No. 65. Frank McCourt hasn’t exactly been Mr. Spend Heavily On The Draft, so we’ll see.

Posted by Peaches | August 13, 2009 at 9:10 pm | ShortcutTalking about Dwyer’s single Cape start? He was so good that the Royals told him to shut it down and they’d pay him in August.
Posted by Jim Callis | August 13, 2009 at 9:19 pm | ShortcutHave you heard anything on Phils front? They have spent less than 2 million on the draft so far.
Posted by Tabish | August 13, 2009 at 9:35 pm | Shortcut[...] Callis of Baseball America was reporting today that the Royals signed 4th round pick LHP-Chris Dwyer. Sam Mellinger, on the other hand, [...]
Posted by Thursday Crown Gems and Some Thoughts on Michael Vick | Kings of Kauffman | A Kansas City Royals Blog | August 14, 2009 at 12:08 am | ShortcutRe the Phillies: They’re still kicking the tires on Brody Colvin (seventh round), but I’m not sure if that one will get done. Jake Stewart (14th) and Andrew Susac (16) are two more potential high-priced targets.
Posted by Jim Callis | August 14, 2009 at 12:38 am | ShortcutMalm!!!! Now we need Diekroger and three out of four in the way of Glaesman, Bailey, Washington, and Maddox.
Posted by Joshua | August 14, 2009 at 12:57 am | ShortcutThe Royals signed some top athletes early on for dirt cheap. This freed up some spending cash for other draft picks.
Posted by B. Jackson (Scout) | August 14, 2009 at 12:57 am | ShortcutIs there any chance that Strasburg has already agreed to terms with Washington, but the bonus amount was so large that MLB won’t announce it until right before the deadline? It would be a tough secret to keep but it seems MLB is being very secretive when it comes to bonus amounts this year. Just a thought. If Aroldis Chapman is going to fetch $50M then Strasburg is worth it. Chapman may be able to throw 100mph, but if you can’t spot it or throw it for strikes then it doesn’t mean anything. Nick Neugeberger could throw 101mph, where is he at today? Strasburg is a much more proven commodity, any opinions?
Posted by Joshua | August 14, 2009 at 1:08 am | ShortcutRe the Rays: They’re sitting on several signings and plan on announcing them all at once. I believe they’re already done or just about done with Glaesmann (third), Bailey (fourth), Malm (fifth) and James (ninth) for around a combined $3 million. We’re still hunting down the particulars.
Posted by Jim Callis | August 14, 2009 at 1:12 am | ShortcutRe Strasburg: No chance. I think he’ll sign, but unless the Nationals have agreed to $50 million, that’s not a done deal.
Posted by Jim Callis | August 14, 2009 at 1:14 am | Shortcutwhy is mccourt so cheap???
does he not have money?? he is the owner of the LA dodgers!!!
Posted by Matthew | August 14, 2009 at 1:14 am | ShortcutThose who even think about limiting signings to slot money are incredibly short sighted. No elite high school prospect with good academics should even think about signing for slot unless in the first round. A good college degree is worth about 4 million. Few high school signees find it practical to complete school under MLB’s scholarship program. A college athletic scholarship comes with support and tutoring that the MLB scholarship does not. It should take a premium above slot to persuade a high school kid to forgo higher education, and if you limit signings to slot, baseball will lose several years of elite players’ careers..
Posted by Phil | August 14, 2009 at 4:05 am | ShortcutIf the Yankees spent the $’s that the Royals have spent on recent drafts the entire world would be crying!!!
Posted by Mitchell | August 14, 2009 at 5:08 am | ShortcutRe Phil on slotting: You are correct, sir. Teams obviously don’t mind paying a lot more than what MLB considers market value to get talent.
