The Red Sox and third-round pick David Renfroe have agreed to terms on a $1.4 million bonus. Under MLB provisions for two-sport athletes, his bonus will be spread over five years. The net present value of the deal comes in below the $1,134,000 bonus Boston gave first-round pick Reymond Fuentes.
Renfroe’s bonus is well over MLB’s $294,300 recommendation for his draft slot (No. 107). It’s the second-highest bonus in the third round this year, trailing only the $2 million that Wil Myers agreed to with the Royals today.
A two-way star at South Panola High (Batesville, Miss.), Renfroe will be a position player as a pro. He’s a polished hitter with solid power and a plus arm that delivered fastballs that topped out at 95 mph. A star quarterback as well, he had committed to Mississippi.
