Red Sox Land Jacobs For $750,000

Tenth-round pick Brandon Jacobs has agreed to terms on a $750,000 bonus with the Red Sox. He’s expected to sign with Boston once he passes a physical today. His deal is the largest bonus after the eighth round this year, and $600,000 more than MLB’s max recommendation for bonuses after the fifth round.

An outfielder at Parkview High in Lilburn, Ga., Jacobs was also a top running back recruit with a football scholarship to Auburn. He’s raw as a baseball player, but he’s also a 6-foot-3, 240-pounder with exciting power and speed.

Under MLB provisions for two-sport athletes, Jacobs’ bonus will be paid out over a five-year period. MLB calculates the net present value of his deal as $683,924.

Any news on Younginer? Do you think he signs?

I think they’re closer to deals on third-rounder David Renfroe and 26th-rounder Miles Head. They could still sign Younginer, who reportedly wants a seven-figure bonus, but that will take more time.

Thoughts on Volz signing? Thanks.

After a down spring at Baylor, Volz didn’t see his stuff bounce back on the Cape. His fastball sat at 86-88 mph a lot and he still battled his delivery. Can’t see him getting big money, and he probably won’t sign unless he’s just really determined to turn pro now.

With all these high school players signing do

think Oakland will sign Stassi, Krol???

I think there’s a good chance they’ll sign Stassi. Not sure on Krol.

Any word on the Rays first five picks signing? Its getting closer and closer to the deadline and now I can’t find any information, even from Marc Topkin, as to whether we are close to getting any of them signed. Seems like taking the high school guys may come back to bite us this season.

I’d be surprised if any team didn’t sign at least three of its top five picks. For the Rays, I think they’ll definitely get Washington and Bailey done; I’m less certain but somewhat optimistic on Glaesmann and Malm; and I think Diekroger will be the toughest. Their 10th-rounder, Derek Dennis, is pretty interesting as well.

Thanks for the response Jim, I’ll keep my fingers crossed, I had heard that Diekroger would be the toughest because of his Stanford commitment, hadn’t heard much on Dennis though, thanks.

No problem. And since my last reply, count me as more optimistic on Glaesmann.
