The Red Sox have signed 26th-round pick Miles Head for $335,000, more than double MLB’s recommended $150,000 maximum for selections after the fifth round.
A third baseman from Whitewater High (Fayetteville, Ga.), Head was the best high school hitter in the state of Georgia this year. His position is somewhat in question, but he makes consistent contact with a short stroke and offers promising power. He had committed to Georgia.
Boston is close to completing deals with third-rounder David Renfroe and seventh-rounder Madison Younginer, but neither has been finalized yet. Renfroe is expected to get a bonus of roughly $1.5 million (spread over multiple years under MLB provisions for two-sport athletes), while Younginer is expected to receive a bonus slightly under $1 million.

Re the M’s: Not hearing anything specific on those guys. Sorry.
Posted by Jim Callis | August 14, 2009 at 3:15 pm | ShortcutMiles Head is a good hitter and I wish him luck. I think that a new hitter has emerged in Georgia that will garner some attention. Eric Arce is a left-handed hitter that at this stage looks to be much more advanced than his age. Arce was the MVP of the 18u WWBA and has made a name for himself at the PerfectGame Nationals and East Coast Pro in Lakeland. The kid has verbaled to Georgia Tech. Played with Miles Head this summer with the East Cobb Braves.
Posted by Raul Davila | August 14, 2009 at 9:29 pm | ShortcutWe are very proud of Miles Head. He has a very professional attitude and very gracious and appreciative with people around him. He will be an asset to MLB!!! on and off the field. May God go with him. Close friends— Mr and Mrs. Jesse Fussell
