The Rangers have signed 24th-rounder Shawn Blackwell for $300,000, twice MLB’s recommended maximum for players selected after the fifth round.
A righthander from Clear Creek High (League City, Texas), Blackwell usually sits in the high 80s with his fastball and spins a promising curveball. At 6-foot-5 and 195 pounds, he has plenty of room to add strength on his frame. He had committed to Kansas.
