No team has been as aggressive signing over-slot players as the Pirates, and they added another one Friday. Pittsburgh signed 12th-rounder Jeff Inman for $425,000, well over MLB’s maximum $150,000 recommendation for picks after the fifth round.
A righthander, Inman went 2-6, 6.11 as a junior this spring at Stanford. But he performed well in the Cape Cod League last summer and offers a lot of upside. Even when he struggled in 2009, he had a low-90s fastball that touched 96 mph and flashed a solid curveball. He didn’t pitch in the season’s final month after coming down with shoulder tendinitis.

Do you think they’re going to add Jordan Cooper too? I hope he attends UK!
Posted by Mike | August 14, 2009 at 3:44 pm | ShortcutRe Cooper: Not sure. Every time it seems like the Pirates might be done, they sign another guy, so we’ll see.
Posted by Jim Callis | August 14, 2009 at 4:13 pm | ShortcutSpeeking of UK, what about Taylor Rogers? The orioles keep making big signs and he is one who needs to come to UK. What do you think Jim?
Posted by Mike | August 14, 2009 at 4:16 pm | ShortcutRe Rogers: I’m hearing the Orioles have one more big signing in them and it might be Michael Ohlman (11th round).
Posted by Jim Callis | August 14, 2009 at 4:22 pm | ShortcutThanks Jim, one more thing. Can you explain the MLB trade deadline? I am a bit confused by how it works as teams are still making trades past the deadline.
Thank you
Posted by Mike | August 14, 2009 at 4:23 pm | ShortcutAny word on the Padres and guys like Jorge Reyes and John Wooten?
Posted by Alex | August 14, 2009 at 4:24 pm | ShortcutRe trades: Players can be traded as long as they clear waivers, or to the team that claims them on waivers.
Posted by Jim Callis | August 14, 2009 at 4:32 pm | ShortcutRe the Padres: Reyes was very good on the Cape and the Padres should make a run at him, though I don’t know where the Scott Boras Corp. has set his price tag. Not hearing anything either way on Wooten.
Posted by Jim Callis | August 14, 2009 at 4:32 pm | ShortcutRe: the Orioles, Jim, so it looks like Ohlman but not Garrett Bush at this point?
Posted by James F | August 14, 2009 at 5:04 pm | ShortcutThat’s my best guess on the Orioles.
Posted by Jim Callis | August 14, 2009 at 5:09 pm | ShortcutCongratulations Wil Myers. You deserve it all.
We are very proud of you.
John and Brenda Moore
Posted by John Moore | August 14, 2009 at 8:46 pm | Shortcut“I’m going to Kentucky unless something crazy happens,” said Cooper, The Tennessean Player of the Year from Shelbyville. Cooper had said he would play college ball unless he received a $900,000 signing bonus.
“They wanted to see if I was going to come off my number, and unless I was going to come off it, they weren’t going to be able to get close to it,” he said of the Pirates. “That’s pretty much all that was said.” – The Tennesseean, August 5
