Orioles Agree With Henry, Berry

The Orioles agreed to terms with fourth-round pick Randy Henry and ninth-rounder Ryan Berry. Henry will receive a $365,000 bonus, which is $106,700 above MLB’s slot recommendation for the 116th overall pick. Berry will receive $417,600, the same bonus as Baltimore’s third-rounder (Tyler Townsend) and well over the $150,000 maximum guideline the commissioner’s office has for picks after the fifth round.

Both Henry and Berry were in Baltimore for physicals Monday and their signings should become official shortly. Fifth-rounder Ashur Tolliver is visiting the club for a physical today.

A freshman righthander at South Mountain (Ariz.) CC, Henry flashed a mid-90s fastball and plus breaking ball late in the juco season. He missed all of 2008 following Tommy John surgery and worked just 11 innings this spring.

Berry, a righthander from Rice, looked like a first-round pick early in the season before he hurt his shoulder in mid-March. He returned at the end of the season, though some clubs still worried about the condition of his shoulder. Berry’s out pitch is a knuckle-curve, and he can locate his 88-91 mph fastball to both sides of the plate.

Good for Ryan. He had made clear that he intended to return to school if he wasn’t 3rd round or higher, and given that he absolutely loves college (he has been a freshman orientation adviser both upperclass years and participated actively in his residential college events) and that he’s closing in on a Civil Engineering degree from Rice, that was clearly no idle threat.

I’m sure Peter Angelos also didn’t want the egg on his face of losing another good Rice prospect to a return to school like he did with Townsend five years ago.

I would not be surprised, however, to learn of Berry finishing his degree by December 2010.
