The Mariners have signed No. 27 overall pick Nick Franklin for $1.28 million. He’s the 17th of the 32 first-rounders to sign and the fifth to get more than MLB’s recommendation for his slot. The commissioner’s office’s guideline was $1,161,000.
A shortstop from Lake Brantley High in Altamonte Springs, Fla., Franklin is a switch-hitter with gap power and plus speed. He has been compared to Aaron Hill, with less power but a better chance to remain at shortstop. Franklin had committed to Auburn.

Any news on Ian Krol? Will OAK be able to pull him from his commitment to ‘Zona?
Posted by nick | August 15, 2009 at 3:45 pm | ShortcutJim other sites are reporting that Stassi has singed any word
Posted by Michael | August 15, 2009 at 3:55 pm | ShortcutRe Blandford: Nothing new to report yet. The sides are still talking.
Posted by Jim Callis | August 15, 2009 at 4:19 pm | ShortcutRe Krol: The two sides are still talking.
Posted by Jim Callis | August 15, 2009 at 4:21 pm | ShortcutRe Stassi: I expect a deal to be reached but don’t have word that’s happened yet.
Quick update: It hasn’t happened. If it does, it will likely come on Monday.
Posted by Jim Callis | August 15, 2009 at 4:22 pm | ShortcutJim, any word on Matzek? I heard the Rockies and Matzek talked last week.
Posted by bbfan | August 15, 2009 at 4:33 pm | ShortcutRe Matzek: As with all the talks involving the elite high school pitchers, that’s moving slow. He’s the first-rounder most likely not to sign, but I wouldn’t write him off. Negotiations haven’t progressed much beyond the preliminaries.
Posted by Jim Callis | August 15, 2009 at 4:35 pm | ShortcutAny word on Shelby Miller?
Posted by mike devault | August 15, 2009 at 4:40 pm | ShortcutRe Miller: As I said with Matzek, the elite high school pitching talks are moving slowly. I’ll be surprised if Miller doesn’t sign, but we’re probably going to have to wait until Monday for it.
Posted by Jim Callis | August 15, 2009 at 4:41 pm | ShortcutIf I remember correctly, the Rockies should be in a good position. They’ve signed 28 of their top 30 picks, and haven’t had to go drastically over slot for any of them. They already have received excellent quality up top with Wheeler and Brothers — both of which seemed like they could go as early as the mid-teens, based on what was reported here and elsewhere.
So, the Rox should have money to make a very good offer, but they don’t have the pressure of NEEDING to bring in a first round talent for the draft, as they already locked up two in Wheeler/Brothers. My uninformed thoughts are that a deal will get done for a sizeable, but not record-breaking, amount.

Posted by dylan | August 15, 2009 at 7:23 pm | ShortcutRe Ackley: Nope. He should sign for big money, probably a few minutes before Monday’s midnight deadline.
Posted by Jim Callis | August 15, 2009 at 7:37 pm | ShortcutAny word on Jake Marisnick, Jake Barrett and KC Hobson, all taken by Toronto?
Posted by CAZConn | August 17, 2009 at 8:28 am | ShortcutRe the Jays: Still working on all three of those guys, I’d set the under/over on the number they’ll sign at 2
