Mariners Sign Franklin For $1.28 Million

The Mariners have signed No. 27 overall pick Nick Franklin for $1.28 million. He’s the 17th of the 32 first-rounders to sign and the fifth to get more than MLB’s recommendation for his slot. The commissioner’s office’s guideline was $1,161,000.

A shortstop from Lake Brantley High in Altamonte Springs, Fla., Franklin is a switch-hitter with gap power and plus speed. He has been compared to Aaron Hill, with less power but a better chance to remain at shortstop. Franklin had committed to Auburn.

Is Seattle close to getting it done with Tyler
Blandford???

Any news on Ian Krol? Will OAK be able to pull him from his commitment to ‘Zona?

Jim other sites are reporting that Stassi has singed any word

Re Blandford: Nothing new to report yet. The sides are still talking.

Re Krol: The two sides are still talking.

Re Stassi: I expect a deal to be reached but don’t have word that’s happened yet.

Quick update: It hasn’t happened. If it does, it will likely come on Monday.

Jim, any word on Matzek? I heard the Rockies and Matzek talked last week.

Re Matzek: As with all the talks involving the elite high school pitchers, that’s moving slow. He’s the first-rounder most likely not to sign, but I wouldn’t write him off. Negotiations haven’t progressed much beyond the preliminaries.

Any word on Shelby Miller?

Re Miller: As I said with Matzek, the elite high school pitching talks are moving slowly. I’ll be surprised if Miller doesn’t sign, but we’re probably going to have to wait until Monday for it.

If I remember correctly, the Rockies should be in a good position. They’ve signed 28 of their top 30 picks, and haven’t had to go drastically over slot for any of them. They already have received excellent quality up top with Wheeler and Brothers — both of which seemed like they could go as early as the mid-teens, based on what was reported here and elsewhere.

So, the Rox should have money to make a very good offer, but they don’t have the pressure of NEEDING to bring in a first round talent for the draft, as they already locked up two in Wheeler/Brothers. My uninformed thoughts are that a deal will get done for a sizeable, but not record-breaking, amount.

any news on dustin ackley?

Re Ackley: Nope. He should sign for big money, probably a few minutes before Monday’s midnight deadline.

Any word on Jake Marisnick, Jake Barrett and KC Hobson, all taken by Toronto?

Re the Jays: Still working on all three of those guys, I’d set the under/over on the number they’ll sign at 2½.
